Is Gurumin 3D Worth a Look?

Gurumin 3D: A Monstrous Adventure, which recently launched for the Nintendo 3DS, is an action RPG about a young girl who befriends a village of monsters and must fight to save them when their village is attacked by the evil Phantoms. It was developed by Nihon Falcom, the company behind the Ys and Legend of Heroes series, among others. The original Gurumin was a Japan-only PC game released in 2004. It was later ported to the PSP in 2006 and brought outside of Japan for the first time. In 2015, the original PC version was translated and re-released in HD on Steam. There were slight differences between the two, such as costumes only present in the PSP and a “rhythm bar” excluded fro... »

A Look Back at Super Paper Mario

A Look Back at Super Paper Mario

Before Paper Mario: Color Splash, Super Paper Mario on the Wii was probably the most divisive game in the Paper Mario series. For many fans, it’s on one side or the other of a turning point in the series: either the last great Paper Mario game, or the point where the series started to go downhill. What is it about Super Paper Mario that causes such controversy? Gameplay The first two Paper Mario games were turn-based RPGs. Super Paper Mario, however, was an action RPG, with gameplay more akin to a sidescrolling platformer than the previous games in the series. It had four playable characters, each with different abilities, such as Mario’s ability to “flip” between 2D ... »

Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir – What Went Wrong?

Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir – What Went Wrong?

Despite Nintendo’s general image as the family-friendly company, there are some terrifying, excellent horror games available for Nintendo’s consoles. Then there are some that didn’t quite work out… like Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir for the Nintendo 3DS. Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir The game is a spin-off of the Fatal Frame series, but unlike the oft-praised Fatal Frame games, Spirit Camera saw an abysmal reception. It was criticized for its length, lack of scares, and awkward gameplay. But despite having a campaign you can finish in around 3 hours and only a small amount of side content, its content isn’t really what doomed it. It was the camera. Spirit ... »

It’s unclear yet if these trials will replace Gyms or not. Alola is also threatened by the mysterious Ultra Beasts, strange creatures that aren’t Pokémon. A research organization called the A... »

Hidden RPG Gems on the Nintendo Wii

Hidden RPG Gems on the Nintendo Wii

We’ve talked about some of the best RPGs on the Nintendo Wii, but as with all systems, some great games fly under the radar. If you think the Wii doesn’t have a lot of standout RPGs, here are a couple people often overlook. Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon Fragile Dreams is an unusual RPG. Co-developed by Namco Bandai and tri-Crescendo, it has many similarities with survival horror games, despite not being a horror game itself. It is set in a world where most of the population has vanished after a cataclysmic event. A teenage boy named Seto ventures into post-apocalyptic Tokyo to search for other survivors. As you explore abandoned locations using the Wiimote as your fl... »

Will We Ever Get The World Ends With You 2?

Will We Ever Get The World Ends With You 2?

The World Ends With You is an action RPG developed by Square Enix for the Nintendo DS. It came out in 2008 and seemed perfectly designed to receive a sequel… a sequel which fans are still waiting for. With a unique combat system designed to make use of the DS’s two screens, and a twisting, exciting story about a group of teenagers fighting for their lives in an alternate Shibuya, The World Ends With You received high praise. Its main plot is self-contained, but a series of Secret Reports expand the universe in unexpected ways. If you collect all of the Secret Reports, you unlock a special ending that also suggests a sequel is possible. In particular, the Secret Reports add angels... »

Super Paper Mario When it came out, Super Paper Mario was somewhat controversial among Paper Mario fans, because it wasn’t a turn-based RPG like its predecessors. Instead, it was a platforming action RPG. Nevertheless, it’s still an RPG and quite an enjoyable one, with the ability to switch between 2D and 3D to overcome certain obstacles, multiple playable characters, and a surprisingly complex and in-depth story. Super Paper Mario might have been different, but it was a lot of fun and introduced some incredib... »

After 30 Years, Where Will Castlevania Go From Here?

After 30 Years, Where Will Castlevania Go From Here?

It’s hard to believe, but the Castlevania series has been around for 30 years now. On September 26, 1986, the first Castlevania game came out in Japan. In the 30 years since then, the series has grown considerably, with dozens of entries. One of the most iconic is Symphony of the Night, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary next October. Symphony of the Night changed the course of Castlevania gameplay and helped create the standard for what many people now call “Metroidvania” games. In 2010, the series was rebooted with Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Lords of Shadow changed the gameplay considerably, and was followed by two sequels. But where will Castlevania go from her... »

Hidden RPG Gems for the Nintendo DS

Hidden RPG Gems for the Nintendo DS

Like the Nintendo 3DS, the Nintendo DS has its share of hidden gems. The DS was home to many excellent RPGs like the port of Chrono Trigger, numerous Pokémon games, and The World Ends With You. As such, they tend to overshadow some of the lesser-known games. Let’s take a look at two hidden RPG gems for the Nintendo DS: Glory of Heracles and Magical Starsign. Glory of Heracles Glory of Heracles has an impressive name behind it, which makes it all the more surprising it’s so overlooked. It was written by Kazushige Nojima, a writer more famous for his work on the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts games. It is actually the sixth game in the Glory of Heracles series, but the only one s... »

Dragon Quest X Could Be Localized With Fan Support

Dragon Quest X Could Be Localized With Fan Support

The majority of the numbered Dragon Quest games are single-player turn-based JRPGs, but Dragon Quest X is a notable exception. It’s an MMORPG that so far has only been released in Japan, but that could still change. In Japan, Dragon Quest X was released for a wide variety of systems: the Wii, Wii U, PC, Android, and 3DS. While it’s unlikely any of those versions will be localized after all this time, new versions are in development. Dragon Quest X is coming to the PlayStation 4 and the mysterious Nintendo NX. If they release any version of Dragon Quest X in the West, it will probably be the newest ones. Since Square Enix showed no sign of localizing Dragon Quest X before, some fa... »
