March 11 – March 17: This Week in Nintendo News

Last week was filled with excitement thanks to the Nintendo Direct. And even though we just had a Nintendo Direct, indie game fans have another event to look forward to next week! Nintendo has announced that on March 20 at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET, there will be a new Nindies Showcase.

The version 5.0.0 system software update is now available for the Switch. This update adds friend suggestions based on link Facebook and Twitter accounts, new ARMS and Kirby user icons, sooner downloads of digital purchases made from a PC or smartphone, a news filter, changes to the Parental Controls feature, and other small adjustments. An atmospheric side-scrolling platform adventure game has been announced called Planet Alpha, due out this year. In it, you’ll need to manipulate the time of day to influence an alien planet. Check out the announcement trailer.

V-Rally 4, the first game in the V-Rally racing series since 2003, has been announced for a release in September. It promises over 50 cars and a gameplay experience that will remain true to the series while using modern technology. Check out the teaser trailer.

Hazelnut Bastille, an action game originally announced for the PC, will also be coming to the Switch. It is a top-down game inspired by SNES games, and it will include music by the Secret of Mana composer, Hiroki Kikuta.

Next, the action RPG Decay of Logo has announced its platforms, which includes the Switch. It follows a girl seeking revenge alongside her elk companion, on a journey through a vast interconnected world. Take a look at the trailer.

Lode Runner Legacy is coming to the Switch eShop worldwide this spring. It will feature local co-op as well as a new Craft Mode that lets you create your own levels and characters, which you can then share with other players. It will also feature an enemy-free Puzzle Mode, new enemies in Extra Mode, and a 150-level Classic Mode. Check out the official trailer.

If you like the Shantae series, you should be pleased by the surprise announcement that Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse is coming to the Switch next week, on March 20. It will include HD Rumble and the “Super Shantae Nab” mini-game from the retail release.

Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles is also coming to the Switch. This exploration-driven game will be $29.99 on the eShop and $39.99 as a retail copy. Take a look at the Switch announcement trailer for a glimpse of Yonder’s tone and style.

Pirate Pop Plus was also announced for the Switch. This arcade action game originally came out for the 3DS and Wii U, followed by the PC. The Switch version will be out in April.

Next, the racing platformer Runbow will be out for the Switch on April 24 digitally, with a retail version to follow on June 14. The retail release will include all of its DLC and unannounced physical items. On the Switch, Runbow will have 8-player local multiplayer in addition to 9-player online multiplayer.

An arcade-style first-person shooter called RICO has been announced for a fall release on PC and consoles. It is a co-op game in which you must crack a case within twenty-four hours, with randomly generated cases and daily challenges. Check out the announcement trailer.

And Curve Digital has announced that Kuju Entertainment is developing a game based on the Netflix drama series Narcos. They released a teaser trailer, but it doesn’t show anything besides the name.

First-person exploration game Shape of the World, originally announced for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One, has now added the Switch to its list of platforms for when it launches this spring. It features a procedurally generated world that grows in a new way every time you pass. If you’re curious, check out the original teaser trailer.

An updated version of Sonic Mania is due out this summer, but don’t worry if you’ve already played it. Not only will Sonic Mania Plus be a physical release with new content, but the additional content will also be available as a free update for the original Sonic Mania. The new content adds Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel as new playable characters, a new Encore Mode, and a four-player Competition Mode. Sonic Mania Plus will come with a holographic slip cover, a reversible Sega Genesis sleeve, and a 32-page art book. It will cost $29.99.
Update: Some sources are reporting that the additional content for the original game will be paid DLC rather than a free update.

Finally, the graphic adventure game NAIRI: Tower of Shirin, originally announced for the PC, is coming to the Switch as well. This is a cute adventure game focused on narrative and puzzle-solving. Take a look at the Switch announcement trailer.

Rice Digital has announced an “Encore Edition” of the upcoming visual novel Song of Memories. This limited edition will cost $99.99 and include the game, an art book, a four-disc soundtrack CD, cloth screen cleaners featuring character artwork, and a penguin mobile phone charm, all in a collector’s box.

Runner3 will be out on May 22, both digitally and physically. Physical copies include a full-color instruction booklet, a 3-inch CD sampler, and a light-up PVC character strap. Take a look at the release date trailer.

Gal Gun 2 now has a western release date. It will be out on April 12 in Europe and April 24 in North America. There will be an English live stream on March 14 at 7 PM PT/10 PM ET through the developer’s Twitch channel. A new trailer is also available, following its Japanese launch.

Ys VIII will be out for the Switch on June 28 in Japan. Its western release date hasn’t been specified yet.

And the western release for Valkyria Chronicles 4 has been updated to “fall,” although there is still no specific date. (However, some retailers have put up listings for October 16.) The English website has also opened. A new trailer shows off various stages in the game, so take a look.
