February 4 – February 10: This Week in Nintendo News

We’ve had quite a few busy weeks of Nintendo news so far in 2018, and this week also brought a surprising amount of news.

My Nintendo News

In early March, Nintendo is changing a few details about how My Nintendo Gold Points work. First, you’ll earn Gold Points worth 5% the amount of your purchase for digital purchases (Switch, Wii U, or 3DS) and 1% the amount of your purchase for physical purchases (Switch only). Then you’ll be able to redeem these points for eligible Switch purchases from the eShop. You can read more about it here.

Nintendo Switch News

In January, Nippon Ichi Software announced a new game called Liar Princess and the Blind Prince, and the Switch has now been officially announced as one of the platforms it will be released on. It is a side-scrolling game with a hand-drawn art style, and it tells a love story between a monster in the form of a princess and a blind prince. You’ll have to use the princess’s two forms to guide the prince. It will be out on May 31 in Japan. The original announcement included a short gameplay video.

A hand-illustrated survival RPG called Smoke and Sacrifice has been announced. It is set in a dark, living world and tells a “brutal story of motherhood and survival” as a woman named Sachi tried to learn the fate of her child. Check out the announcement trailer to learn more about it.

In other RPG news (an isometric RPG this time), the console release of Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire will include the Switch. The console versions are planned for the holiday 2018 season.

Another mobile game is being ported to the Switch, as well. This one is Seven Knights, an RPG with hundreds of heroes. It’s unclear what changes will be made to the Switch version, but the developer is interested in making more console games in the future.

Next, side-scrolling action platformer Fox n Forests is coming to consoles, including the Switch. It will be out in spring 2018. Check out the new trailer.

And Harvest Moon: Light of Hope (currently available on the PC) is coming to the consoles in May as the Harvest Moon: Light of Hope Special Edition. It will cost $39.99 and include unspecified new features to be announced soon. (Remember, this is Natsume’s new Harvest Moon series, not to be confused with the older series previously known as Harvest Moon.)

Bear With Me is a noir-style point-and-click adventure game previously released episodically on Steam. It is now coming to consoles, with all three episodes bundled together, in Q2 2018. It follows a girl searching for her lost brother while being aided by her teddy bear, Ted E. Bear.

And in the last of this week’s new Switch game announcements, the remastered action-adventure game Legend of Kay Anniversary will be out for the Switch later this year. Check out the Switch announcement trailer.

The visual novel Song of Memories has been delayed in Japan, but it now has a spring release window for all regions.

Next, NIS America had a special event near the end of the week that resulted in many announcements, including localization news for Happy Birthdays and the roguelike Touhou Genso Wanderer Reloaded. You can check out their trailers below. Happy Birthdays will include new elements not found in Birthdays the Beginning, and Touhou is also available in a collector’s edition that comes with the game, an acrylic parade stand, a button set, a hardcover art book, and a soundtrack, all in a collector’s box.

But that’s not all. NIS also announced the localization of Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk, which will be out on the Switch this fall. There will also be a special edition that comes with the game, a deck of tarot cards, a lapel pin set, a hardcover art book and bookmark, and a two-disc soundtrack, all in a collector’s box. Check out the announcement trailer.

Don’t forget that we’ve got some horror games coming to the Switch! Layers of Fear: Legacy will be on the eShop on February 21 for $19.99. It includes the main game, redesigned for the Switch, as well as its DLC. Check out the latest trailer.

Meanwhile, the unusual crossover puzzle game Bridge Constructor Portal (a Bridge Constructor spin-off with a Portal theme) was announced in December for a Switch release, and now it has a date: February 28. It will cost $14.99, and a new trailer is available now.

We’d been wondering what the Switch version of Level-5’s The Snack World: Trejarers would be like, and now we have more details at last. Officially titled The Snack World: Trejarers Gold, it will launch on April 12 in Japan and be a “super-evolved” version of the game with enhanced graphics, improved combat, and the DLC packs included.

And Fallen Legion: Rise to Glory, which includes both Fallen Legion RPGs, will be out on May 29 in North America and June 1 in Europe. You can also preorder an Exemplary Edition that comes with the game, a hardcover art book, a soundtrack, and a Medallion of Honor, all in a collector’s box. Take a look at the new trailer.

Brawlout, the fighting party game that came out on the eShop in December, now has a retail edition coming out in May. Angry Mob Games will handle the physical release.

SteamWorld Dig 2 is also getting a physical release, to be published by Rising Star Games. It is set for spring and will include a double-sided poster and a reversible inlay with new artwork.

And the physical release of Owlboy is planned for May 29. (The digital version will be out next week, on February 13.) A trailer for the physical version is up now.

It has also been announced that the adventure platformer Flipping Death, announced last year for the Switch, will have a physical version released at the same time as its digital version this spring. The physical edition will include two collector’s card that contain character biographies and can be used to help complete your in-game collection of cards.

Finally, a physical version of Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom will also be out alongside the digital version this summer.

The latest updates to the Valkyria Chronicles 4 website include introductions of four new characters as well as another gameplay system: the Centurion. The Centurion is a powerful warship that can support you in battle when you select “Ship Order.” Its abilities include Radar (displaying enemies), Bombardment (bombing indicated area), Relief Unit (healing and evacuation), and Vehicle Emergency Repair (revive evacuated vehicle units). The first character trailer is also available.

Next, the first character trailer is out for Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition. This trailer highlights Link, Zelda, Impa, Linkle, Lana, Volga, Wizzro, and Cia.

Arc System Works also announced that Yang Xiao Long and Blake Belladonna from RWBY will be free DLC characters for BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, which has caused controversy due to having half its roster as DLC.

And we have yet another trailer for Koei Tecmo’s Attack on Titan 2. Previously we’ve seen combat and daily life, and now this new trailer highlights the multiplayer aspects. You’ll be able to team up with other players in co-op mode or compete against each other to see who can earn the highest score. Take a look.

Unfortunately, we also have a delay this week: Penny-Punching Princess has been delayed to March 30 in Europe and April 4 in North America. However, a new trailer was also released.

Finally, we have new trailers available for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana and SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy. Take a look.

And the highly anticipated Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Version 1.3.0 update will be out next week, although the specific date wasn’t given yet. This update will add the Advanced New Game Mode, which is basically a New Game+. In the Advanced New Game Mode, you’ll be able to befriend certain story Blades (from Torna), send any Blade on mercenary missions, use a “Reverse Affinity Chart” for additional growth, level-down at inns in exchange for bonuses, and unlock the Level 4 move for a certain blade.
