Top 5 Upcoming Nintendo Switch RPGs
Despite a small launch lineup, the Nintendo Switch is off to a good start. Not only that, but it already has a few promising RPGs planned for its future! Here are the Nintendo Switch RPGs we’re looking forward to the most.
5. Project Octopath Traveler
We don’t know a lot about Project Octopath Traveler, but it’s a new RPG in development by the Square Enix team that made the Bravely Default games. Square Enix has been very quiet when it comes to this game, so why are we looking forward to it already? Although we don’t know much about it, its unique art style, what appears to be traditional turn-based combat, and general curiosity about a new IP from the Bravely team are enough to make us want to see more.
4. Lost Sphear
While many fans loved I Am Setsuna, the first game from Square Enix’s Tokyo RPG Factory, it fell short of expectations for a lot of fans. However, the developers have promised that they’re fixing I Am Setsuna’s flaws for the oddly-named Lost Sphear, which will include more varied environments, the ability to move during battle, and a longer story. Lost Sphear will be out on January 23.
3. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
Unlike the previous examples, this one is a tactical RPG… and a big surprise for many fans. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is an odd idea for a crossover, but its gameplay demonstrations promise XCOM-esque gameplay combined with exploration and humor. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle will be out on August 29, and we’re looking forward to seeing what the full game is like.
2. Battle Chasers: Nightwar
In 2015, Airship Syndicate ran a successful Kickstarter to fund Battle Chasers: Nightwar, an RPG set in the universe of the Battle Chasers comics. While they could have gone in many directions with such an idea, they chose to draw inspiration from classic JRPGs. Battle Chasers: Nightwar features a world map, turn-based combat, and many other features that have us excited for this game when it launches on October 3.
1. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Xenoblade Chronicles was an incredible RPG and Xenoblade Chronicles X was also fantastic (although very different from its predecessor). That alone gives fans reason to look forward to Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and this upcoming game from Monolith Soft has plenty of potential. A vast world, an exciting new combat system, and an intriguing story about a search for the paradise known as Elysium are a few of the things that make Xenoblade Chronicles 2 the Switch RPG we’re looking forward to the most.
These are our top 5 upcoming Switch RPGs, but what are yours? The Switch Pokémon game and the new Shin Megami Tensei entry will certainly jump to the top of many fans’ lists once we learn a little more about them, and we haven’t let go of hope that Dragon Quest XI will be localized.
We also focused on JRPGs and JRPG-inspired games, but what are some good Western RPGs coming to the Switch? Let us know your thoughts on these five games, as well as the Switch RPGs you’re most looking forward to, in the comments below.
