July 16 – July 22: This Week in Nintendo News

This week saw the arrival of a Nintendo rumor that will make some fans unhappy: Miiverse might be shutting down. Reports say the latest Wii U update included a line about the end of the Miiverse service. Although this social platform was present on both the 3DS and Wii U, it didn’t make the jump to the Switch. If this report is true, even 3DS and Wii U players might not have much longer to use it.

Nintendo Switch News

Speaking of indefinite announcements, two more developers talked about the potential for games on the Switch. First, Kingdom Hearts director Tetsuya Nomura did not rule out the possibility of bringing Kingdom Hearts 3 to the Switch, although he said their primary focus is on the platforms they’ve already announced. In slightly more substantial news, Blazblue director Toshimichi Mori said in an interview that “fighting games can definitely find a home on the Switch.”

This week also saw the launch of the Nintendo Switch Online app for iOS and Android. Unfortunately, many fans still aren’t sold on the idea of using a separate app for multiplayer features, and the app hasn’t made much progress toward convincing them. Reception to it has been very mixed.

But let’s move on to better news! Several game announcements came out this week. A new puzzle game called Blockle will launch on August 3, and a visual novel called Song of Memories being localized this fall is expected to be released on the Switch later.

One Piece: Unlimited World Red Deluxe Edition will come out for the Switch on September 29, digitally in North America and both physically and digitally in Europe. Rogue Trooper Redux, an upcoming remaster of Rogue Trooper, will be coming to the Nintendo Switch sometime after its initial October 17 release. The musical action-adventure game Figment will also come to the Switch later this year, and so will Retro City Rampage DX.

Finally, while Sine Mora EX will be available on August 8 for other platforms, the Switch version is anticipated to be out “later this summer.”

A new trailer was released for Nights of Azure 2, and a superpowered villain named Infinite was revealed for Sonic Forces. Finally, for players enjoying Mighty Gunvolt Burst on the Switch or 3DS, Inti Creates announced a new character. Ekoro, from the Gal*Gun games, will be available as DLC for Mighty Gunvolt Burst on July 27. This DLC will be free until August 9, so be sure to download it soon!

Nintendo 3DS News

The Mighty Gunvolt Burst announcement is a touch of 3DS news, and there was very little else this week. Nintendo released a goofy new trailer for Miitopia, as well as a trailer featuring the New Nintendo 2DS systems. Finally, although the mobile version of Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy is already available, Level-5 announced that the 3DS version will be out in October.

In Conclusion

It was a slow week, but there were still some intriguing announcements. And what do you make of the Miiverse rumor? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
