Top 5 Paper Mario Bosses
The Paper Mario series has had many memorable characters (at least in the originals) and entertaining boss fights. Let’s count down through some of the greatest bosses in the Paper Mario series.
5. Koopa Bros.
The Koopa Bros. serve as one of the earliest boss fights in Paper Mario, so they aren’t particularly difficult compared to other bosses, but they’re certainly entertaining. These four costumed Koopas are a clear reference to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and above all, they want to make sure you know how cool they are.
Francis, from Super Paper Mario, is not a memorable boss for the battle itself, but for the scenes leading up to it. You need to answer several questions to reach him (including the fan-favorite true/false statement, “I love going on message boards and complaining about games I’ve never played!”), and then you enter a hilarious dating sim parody where you select dialogue choices for Princess Peach. It’s a goofy encounter, and one that isn’t easily forgotten.
Super Paper Mario also gave us Mimi, whose boss battle is preceded by one of the creepiest scenes in the series. To keep its full effect intact, we won’t spoil Mimi’s transformation. Let’s just say if you think she’s creepy as a little girl, you haven’t seen anything yet.
2. Tubba Blubba
When I played the first Paper Mario, I found it nerve-wracking to visit Tubba Blubba’s Castle. Not only were there sentinels who would take you back to the start if they spotted you, but Tubba Blubba himself is invincible when you arrive. Until you take the necessary steps to make him vulnerable again, an encounter with him is an impossible battle in which you can inflict no damage, only run. A tense chase through the castle makes it quite cathartic when you’re finally able to fight him as a boss.
1. Shadow Queen
One thousand years ago, a demonic being known as the Shadow Queen appeared and waged war across the land. Heroes rose up to stop her, but her spirit lived on even once they destroyed her body. Finally, they sealed her spirit away beneath her palace and took steps to ensure she could be stopped if she was ever restored to life. This isn’t the sort of backstory most people would expect for a Mario game, unless they’ve played Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. That alone gives the Shadow Queen reason to be this list, but the circumstances of her boss battle together with the events that enable you to defeat her make the Shadow Queen one of the best bosses in the entire Paper Mario series.
Of course, there are many bosses throughout Paper Mario, and while these are our top 5, you might have other favorites. Is there another boss from The Thousand-Year Door you’d put on this list? Maybe even a boss from Sticker Star or Color Splash? Whoever your top Paper Mario bosses are, let us know in the comments.
