Learn About Dragon Quest XI’s Battle Systems

The official website for Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time has been updated with new details about this upcoming RPG’s battle systems.

If you play the 3DS version of Dragon Quest XI, you’ll be able to choose between two different styles, one that presents the game in 3D and one that presents it in 2D. No matter which you pick, Dragon Quest XI will have classic turn-based battles, but some aspects of combat depend on the mode.

3D Mode

As you might guess, 3D Mode presents battles in 3D, with both your characters and monsters visible on the screen. You’ll enter combat by encountering monsters on the field, and one screenshot demonstrates how you can launch a preemptive strike by attacking monsters disguised as mushrooms.

2D Mode

In 2D Mode, battles will be viewed in first-person, with the monsters depicted in classic pixel graphics. You’ll enter combat through random encounters.

And the Nintendo Switch Version?

Square Enix has yet to reveal anything about the Nintendo Switch version. At this point, we don’t know if it will play like the 3DS version or like the PS4 version. The PS4 version features “Free Movement Battles,” where you can freely move, as well as “Auto Camera Battles,” which haven’t been fully described yet.
