A Closer Look at Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s New Battle Modes
One of the biggest changes for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, due out on April 28 for the Nintendo Switch, is its new Battle Mode. The original Mario Kart 8 featured a limited Battle Mode that reused the main game’s tracks, but Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will feature eight special arenas and 5 different battle modes.
At PAX East, MonsterVine had a chance to preview the new battle modes and highlighted two that stand out: Coin Runners and Shine Thief.
Coin Runners last appeared in Mario Kart 7. Your goal is to get as many coins as possible before the end of the match. Coins appear and disappear as players try to grab them, and hitting an opponent with an item makes them drop their coins. The player with the most coins when time runs out wins.
Shine Thief, which last appeared in Mario Kart: Double Dash, challenges players to get a Shine Sprite and hold onto it for 20 seconds. This leads to chaos as every player targets whoever currently has the Shine Sprite, allowing it to change hands often.
According to MonsterVine, Coin Runners and Shine Thief stood out as the most fun Battle Mode games, although the others were still enjoyable. The remaining three are Balloon Battle (the traditional Battle Mode where you attempt to pop your opponents’ balloons), Bob-omb Blast (where players fight with only Bob-ombs), and Renegade Roundup, where one team tries to capture a team of renegades, who in turn try to escape and avoid capture.
