Tapestry Translation Reveals Breath of the Wild Backstory

As we previously announced, not only is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild a Nintendo Switch launch title, but it also comes in three editions: the standard edition, the Special Edition, and the Master Edition. Among other items, the Special and Master Editions of Breath of the Wild include a tapestry.

During the Nintendo Treehouse live stream on January 13, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime displayed the tapestry. It included some text in the Hylian/Sheikah language… and some Legend of Zelda fans proved devoted enough to actually translate it into Japanese and then English.

Spoiler warning: if you want the full backstory of Breath of the Wild to remain mysterious until you play the game, you should stop reading here.

Youtube user Zeltik, who translated the text with the help of other fans in his Discord channel, has uploaded these details in a new video, along with his thoughts on it.

“Hylians pass stories of a destined time long past, where multiple races lived and worked together in harmony. The Sheikah Tribe’s blue aura breathed through the land, and this mutual prosperity continued, until a cataclysmic disaster struck. The hero and the princess attempted in vain to seal the terror, which became known as the Calamity Ganon. Divine Beasts awoke from four directions, and deployed a mechanical army which made the king and his people fearful. They fractured Ganon’s power and sealed him… But the Sheikah were banished from the land ever since.”
