Top 3 RPGs on the Nintendo Wii
The Nintendo Wii was home to some excellent RPGs, and all of them are playable on your Wii U. Let’s take a look at three of the greatest RPGs the Wii has to offer.
3. Super Paper Mario
When it came out, Super Paper Mario was somewhat controversial among Paper Mario fans, because it wasn’t a turn-based RPG like its predecessors. Instead, it was a platforming action RPG. Nevertheless, it’s still an RPG and quite an enjoyable one, with the ability to switch between 2D and 3D to overcome certain obstacles, multiple playable characters, and a surprisingly complex and in-depth story.
Super Paper Mario might have been different, but it was a lot of fun and introduced some incredibly memorable characters. (Dimentio, anyone?) I know I’m not alone in wishing we at least got a Super Paper Mario 2 instead of the direction the series took…
2. The Last Story
One of the three Operation Rainfall games, The Last Story came from Mistwalker and Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy. Unlike Final Fantasy, however, The Last Story was an action RPG with elements of tactics, stealth, and even shooter gameplay. This interesting blend of gameplay made it stand out, although the reception to its story–which focused on a mercenary named Zael who gains mysterious power–was mixed.
Unfortunately, Mistwalker switched to mobile games after The Last Story, although they’re currently working with Silicon Studio (the developer of Bravely Default) on an unknown new title.
1. Xenoblade Chronicles
But if there’s one Wii game that overshadowed The Last Story and the other Wii RPGs, it was Xenoblade Chronicles, an action RPG from Monolith Soft. It was another part of the Operational Rainfall campaign, and became the most successful. Xenoblade had massive open areas, an unusual combat system similar to those found in MMORPGs or games like Dragon Age: Origins, and an epic story filled with unexpected twists and turns.
Xenoblade Chronicles is considered by many people to be the best RPG on the Wii, if not of its whole generation. It was later ported to the New Nintendo 3DS.
