Top 3DS Virtual Console Games

The Nintendo 3DS has a great library of its own, but the Virtual Console is a fantastic way to play some older games on a new system (whether you missed them the first time around or just want to experience them again). Here are some of the best 3DS Virtual Console games.

Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow

Pokémon is one of the most popular series around, and if you want to go back and play the original games, you can do so on your 3DS. Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow are all available on the Virtual Console. Not only are these games intact in their original format, they also support the 3DS’s multiplayer capabilities so you can trade and battle with your friends like you would have with the Game Boy Game Link Cable.

Super Metroid

We recently discussed the uncertain future of 2D Metroid games, but you can try some of the original games through the Virtual Console. To many fans, Super Metroid is the best of 2D Metroid, if not the best Metroid game overall. It’s had a definite impact on the gaming industry and is one of the games that helped define the “Metroidvania” gameplay style. Super Metroid may be old, but it still holds up well today.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening Dx

Link’s Awakening is often overshadowed by more famous entries in the Legend of Zelda series, but it’s one of the most interesting. It doesn’t follow the typical rescue-Zelda-from-Ganon plot, it has a strange cast of quirky characters, and it helped establish what the series would become. It’s worth playing, and it–or rather, its Game Boy Color re-release, Link’s Awakening Dx–is available on the Virtual Console.

In Conclusion

The original Pokémon games, Super Metroid, and Link’s Awakening Dx are our picks for the top 3DS Virtual Console games, but there are many other great options. If you have a New Nintendo 3DS, you also have access to SNES games such as EarthBound. Finally, early adopters of the 3DS had access to the Ambassador games, which included games like Metroid Fusion.

I never played Links Awakening, but it looks like a great Zelda game. I actually gifted that game to Yoshi, a member here. Great list for sure. I never owned a SNES, had a Genesis at the time but I would visit my friend and play the heck out of Super Metroid. Mario and Metroid were the games that made me beg my dad to buy me the NES was I was 9 or 10.

I struggle to get into any of the old Zelda games (even A Link to the Past), so I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Link’s Awakening.

Do you think Breath of the Wild, since it is more open world and allows more exploration will capture your interest easier?

Actually, Breath of the Wild being open-world is what’s made me the most uncertain about it. I’m not a fan of open games.

I enjoyed the 3D Zelda games I’ve played, though, and even the two DS games.

I know if I had a spare hundred bucks, it wouldn’t take any stretch to get me to buy most of the SNES VC games available for the New3DS.
